The year 2024 proved to be a record-breaking year for weather in the state, from a mild winter to a stormy spring to a summer that finally brought a years-long drought to an end. January started the year with brutal cold and intense snowfalls.

The year 2024 wrapped up as one of Iowa’s worst in history for severe weather. State climatologist Justin Glisan says among the many incidents, a record was set for the most-ever tornadoes to touch down in Iowa during a calendar year.

The post-Christmas tornado outbreak pushed 2024 into second place for most U.S. tornadoes recorded in a single year in 75 years of records.
