A welfare check in Spokane Valley escalated into a standoff on Thursday morning after a man pointed a gun at deputies.

The award was given for their response to an armed and barricaded suspect in the Village of Amherst in July 2024.

The SWAT team quickly entered the home to find the suspect with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The children were found safe and removed from the home.
