The governments of Britain and Mauritius have reached a final deal to settle the future of the Chagos Islands but have been barred from signing it by a British judge.

While Britain will retain use of Diego Garcia under a century-long lease, the symbolic break marks a historic shift in global power – and leaves Chagossians without a voice once again.

Sir Keir Starmer has signed a deal to hand the Chagos Islands to Mauritius and lease back a key military base for £101m a year. The prime minister said the deal was the only way to maintain the base's long-term future and strengthened the UK's national security.
