As sports betting has surged, so has the number of people seeking a way out of a gambling addiction, according to a new study in JAMA Internal Medicine that says millions of people are looking for help.

Supreme Court ruling, online queries related to online gambling jumped 23%, the study found. That translated to an estimated 6.5 million to 7.3 million searches nationwide for gambling addiction help.

A study published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine claims to reveal a surge in gambling addiction following the legalization of sports betting. But does a rise in internet searches for gambling terms mean there's been an actual increase in gambling addiction?

Internet searches seeking help for gambling addiction have "increased substantially" as the number of states with legalized sports betting has expanded in recent years, prompting a need for more public health awareness,

"The significantly higher search volumes observed in all eight states make it virtually impossible that our findings occurred by chance," study lead author Atharva Yeola said in a statement. "Statistically speaking, the probability of these results happening randomly is less than one in 25.6 billion."

Searches related to gambling addiction issues and resources have been on the rise over the past several years.
