4:47 p.m. EDT The Trump administration asked the judge to reject Newsom’s request and allow it to respond by Wednesday, calling Newsom’s attempt to block the deployment of federal troops “legally meritless” and saying it would jeopardize the safety of Homeland Security personnel and interfere with the government’s ability to carry out operations.

The fallout continues after days of protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have gripped the Los Angeles area -- especially downtown L.A.

Protests in Los Angeles appeared to quiet overnight, but new ones are popping up in other cities. Trump has deployed more than 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to the protests.

At a peaceful vigil in downtown Los Angeles, interfaith community leaders came together for prayer, support and healing.

Lauren Tomasi, a 9News correspondent, was reporting live when an officer behind her suddenly raised their firearm and fired a nonlethal round at close range.

A curfew for downtown Los Angeles is now in effect. It began at 8 p.m. local time and will last until 6 a.m. The curfew applies to an area about one square mile in downtown LA, which has been the site of clashes between police and protesters over the past several days.
